How Often Should You Get an Eye Test in Malta?
Share
Most people only visit an optician when something feels wrong —
but by then, you may have been living with a problem for years
without realising it.
Here's a simple guide to how often you should get your eyes checked.
-
Children (Under 16)
Children should have their eyes tested every 12 months.
Vision problems caught early are much easier to correct and
can significantly improve school performance and concentration.
-
Adults (16–60)
A full eye test every 2 years is the general recommendation —
or every year if you wear glasses or contact lenses.
Your prescription can change gradually without you noticing.
-
Over 60
Annual eye tests become more important as you get older.
Conditions like glaucoma, cataracts and macular degeneration
are more common with age — and all are far easier to manage
when detected early.
-
People With Diabetes
If you have diabetes, you should have a full eye exam every year
without exception. Diabetic retinopathy can develop silently
and cause serious damage before symptoms appear.
Living in Malta — An Extra Reason to Check
Malta's intense sunshine means higher UV exposure year-round.
This increases the long-term risk of cataracts and other
UV-related eye conditions. Wearing proper UV-protective sunglasses
and getting regular check-ups is especially important here.
